Prehistoric amber with unknown wasps

 

I love wearing my amber jewellery, but entomologists (who study insects), love amber for their interest in researching prehistoric insects.

Roger Burks, Department of Entomology, University of California, was assisting Germany’s Stuttgart State Museum of Natural History, analysing amber samples dating back 34-55 million years ago.

The museum had identified several of their amber samples containing wasps and requested the assistance of Burks as he is one of the few scientists in the world with expertise in wasps.

Even the samples were 2-3mm long, Burks was able to identify a new species of wasp which had never been discovered before.
